Mike Kemp-Schneider, LCSW-R

Welcome!

For the past 30 years, I have worked with a wide range of people to help them make changes in their lives. My area of specialization includes working with individuals and families impacted by addiction. I have found engaging with folks who are currently using substances from a harm-reduction perspective is helpful in empowering them to make thoughtful choices about ongoing change.

Family members and friends of someone struggling with substance abuse many times find themselves having trouble knowing what normal is. They may focus more on others than themselves, feel less than others, believe they have to excel to be accepted and have a general sense of low self esteem. These are common characteristics many times labeled codependency. I offer both individual and group therapy for family and/or friends of substance-using individuals. People find tremendous relief when they hear others share similar stories and feelings.

I also have significant experience working with men. If you are a man who feels isolated from others, socially and/or emotionally, I can help you connect to others and yourself. There is no need to suffer silently.

As mental health issues slowly become less stigmatized, people find themselves more willing to discuss issues of anxiety, depression and low self esteem. We can look together at how these areas may be affecting your view of yourself in the world.

I appreciate that it is daunting to enter into this process. I believe that the fit between the therapist and the client is crucial for successful therapy and meaningful outcomes. My commitment to you, should you decide to contact me, is that I will be honest and genuine, caring and thoughtful.

In terms of the process, I work from a combination of strategy-based interventions that are tailored to your areas of concern. The strategies that we decide on will come from collaborative work that we do to make sense of your story. We all have a personal narrative and it determines how we feel, think, and do.

Events occur over the course of our lives that guide us. Sometimes they guide us in ways that keep us from leading a fulfilling life. We get stuck in patterns and behaviors that keep us from moving forward in our lives. By talking openly and reflecting on what’s talked about, you will begin to see yourself more accurately and know better how to respond to your own personal narrative. This perspective allows you to then make more informed choices about how to make changes in your life. I would be honored to be part of your journey.

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.
